One N Only Colorfix removes unwanted permanent hair color regardless of how long it has been in the hair. Controlled usage allows color correction to specific areas. One N Only Colorfix is designed for full or slight color corrections. From 6 to 16 applications depending on whether use is for partial or full color correction. Apply to dry hair. Mix equal parts of Colorfix Part 1 Color Reducer and Part 2 Conditioning Catalyst in tint bowl or an applicator bottle. (Mix as much as will be needed for the density and length of hair that requires correction.) Wearing gloves and using a tint brush, apply quickly and evenly to the hair. If mixed in an applicator bottle, shake vigorously until thoroughly mixed (45 seconds to 1 minute).

Gently work through the hair to ensure even penetration. After mixing Part 1 Color Reducer and Part 2 Conditioning Catalyst, use as quickly as possible, since the activity of the mixture decrease with time. Cover loosely with a plastic cap, and process up to 20 minutes. Strand test frequently. Low, warm dryer heat may be used to speed processing time. Rinse hair for 3-5 minutes and shampoo.

If sufficient color is not removed, repeat Step 2 and 3 (this may be done on damp, towel-dried hair). Depending on condition of scalp and hair, do not repeat process more than 2-3 times. When desired level of color removal has been achieved, apply Processing Lotion for 5 minutes. (Due to the nature of dye molecules, it is possible that hair may redarken to an unacceptable level.

Today, I have a basement progress update and DIY learning experience (lol) all in one—we painted our exposed basement ceiling black, and we absolutely love it! I truly can’t believe the difference it made in the space

So, today, I’m going to share a little about how and why you might want to paint your exposed basement ceiling instead of going to all the trouble of sheet rocking it.

Normally, when you finish a basement, you drywall the ceiling when you put in the walls. That makes it look like any other room in your house. We decided not to for a few reasons:

Basement Ceilings Painted Black

First up, we have an old house, which means the ceiling height in the basement is quite low. While it might not seem like much, adding drywall would lower the lowest point of the ceiling about an inch. By leaving it open, we not only have the actual extra height, but it feels even higher because of the up and down of the floor joists (does that make sense?).

Keeping the basement ceiling open means that we have access to a lot of the HVAC ducts, plumbing, and electrical in our house. Especially with all of the projects that we’re doing, having those things easy to access has been such a blessing. In the future, if something breaks or we just want to change something, it’s easier to deal with if everything is accessible.

Finally, it looks cool and industrial to paint the exposed ceiling instead of covering it up. And that’s as good of reason as any, right?

Spray Foam Insulation

With an exposed ceiling, especially one like ours that has many pipes, wires, nooks and crannies, it’s best to spray the paint to get a good even finish. I can’t even imagine how long it would have taken with a brush, but it only took about 2 hours with our trusty paint sprayer.

We used Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black, in a matte finish, and we called and ordered a 5 gallon bucket since it’s a large space. They did contactless pickup and just put it in our trunk for us—so easy!

I only did one coat on this project, because we didn’t feel like anyone was going to be looking super closely to notice any drips, so I wasn’t afraid to go somewhat heavy on it.

We did this project before the room had walls (what you see is the spray foam insulation) or floors or anything, which was perfect because it would make a big mess otherwise. We just masked off the windows and the open spots where the light fixtures were going.

If you’re painting a ceiling after those steps, you will really need to prep. I would suggest this for your walls and contractor’s paper all over your floors. I cannot emphasize enough how much the paint got everywhere.

Let me start by saying that I am obsessed with my paint sprayer. It’s been the gift that keeps on giving and gives me crazy ideas that I can probably paint the exterior of our house by myself, right??

Our Painted Basement Ceiling And Why We Love It!

But with any spraying project, you’re going to deal with a bit of mess and overspray, and given that this one was above my head, I knew it was going to be worse than usual. If you’re going to spray a ceiling, it’s important to protect yourself.

Now, I married a safety engineer, so it’s possible that I overdid it slightly, but the main concerns with spraying paint on a ceiling are your eyes and breathing in particles.

For your eyes, wear some good safety glasses and be sure they have coverage on the sides, because paint particles will 100% sneak in the sides. The paint sock on my head also helped cover the sides of my safety glasses.

(He couldn’t hear me call him through my mask, so our system was that I would clap really loudly when I needed help, lol!)

For your lungs, paint is actually a big particle, so you’re going to be pretty safe if you just tie a bandana around your nose and mouth.

The other issue for me, though, is the smell, which can sometimes make me lightheaded. So, I wore this respirator mask, and it honestly completely blocked the paint smell. It was worth the investment because I also wore it while sanding drywall later, which is a smaller particle and more dangerous to breathe.

I also covered my clothes, even though I wore paint clothes, with a paint suit, just to avoid ruining them and/or tracking paint all over the house after. I was glad I did because it had a ton of paint on it in the end. And I wore a hair cover and latex gloves as well.

Finally, I didn’t wear shoes because, again, I didn’t want to track paint around. Instead, I wore a pair of old socks and threw them away as soon as I was done. (This led to the interesting result of having my foot prints in paint all over the concrete floor, lol!)

This has been such an exciting space for us to plug away on, because we’re truly doing everything ourselves and learning so much. Dustin even learned how to do electrical and hang sheet rock, and I mudded and taped all of the walls!

We’re taking a bit of break from this project at the moment, just to focus on the bathroom and outdoors, but we’re getting so close and I can’t wait to see it all come together!

No, we did not use any primer, and we painted right over the joists, wires, ducts, and pipes. I’m not a professional at any of this, so you can go ahead and prime if a pro tells you to and you want to! I will say, so far we haven’t had issues with peeling or flaking, and it has been almost 2 years. Fingers crossed for the future, of course! But I also feel like touch-ups would be pretty straightforward.

The only issues have been places where we added water lines and HVAC where I had to go in and paint the new things. I didn’t want to cover everything again so I just painted with a brush, and it would’ve looked better sprayed, of course. I will say, the darkness of the black hides those brush marks pretty well, though.

This is a great question! We added some flat trim at the spot where the ceiling meets the drywall, almost like crown molding. We painted it black so it would blend in with the ceiling, but you could match the wall or choose a contrasting color if you want to!

I did drywall after painting the ceiling because it seemed easier than trying to cover the drywall and/or paint over the overspray on the walls. We didn’t get any drywall dust on the painted ceiling—I suspect gravity was our friend here? Drywall dust is surprisingly weighty and mostly drops to the ground in piles. I stand by my order of operations here but you can do whatever you’d like in your home!

I chose to paint our exposed basement ceiling black because I felt it would do the best job covering all of the wires and pipes and sort of making them disappear instead of standing out. I think this was effective—it does sort of recess into itself.

Also, our house has a lot of black in it and I’m not afraid of going dark, especially in a place that’s already dark, like a basement. If you’d prefer to paint your ceiling white or another light color, go for it—it’s your house!

Stuart Fergusson Victor Sutcliffe (23 June 1940 – 10 April 1962) was a Scottish painter and musician best known as the original bass guitarist of the glish rock band the Beatles. Sutcliffe left the band to pursue his career as a painter, having previously attded the Liverpool College of Art. Sutcliffe and John Lnon are credited with invting the name "Beetles" (sic), as they both liked Buddy Holly's band, the Crickets. They also had a fascination of group names with double meanings (as Crickets, for example, the word referring to both an insect as well as a sport), so Lnon th came up with "The Beatles", from the word beat (though Lnon's original spelling was "Beatals"

). As a member of the group wh it was a five-piece band, Sutcliffe is one of several people sometimes referred to as the "Fifth Beatle".

Wh he performed with the Beatles in Hamburg, he met photographer Astrid Kirchherr, to whom he was later gaged. After leaving the Beatles, he rolled in the Hamburg College of Art, studying under future pop artist Eduardo Paolozzi, who later wrote a report stating that Sutcliffe was one of his best studts.

A Five Point Guide To The Art And Style Of Stuart Sutcliffe

While studying in West Germany, Sutcliffe began suffering from intse headaches and expericing acute light ssitivity. In February 1962, he collapsed in the middle of an art class after complaining of head pains. German doctors performed tests, but were unable to determine what was causing the headaches. After collapsing again on 10 April 1962, he was tak to a hospital, but died in the ambulance on the way there. The cause of death was later found to have be a brain haemorrhage—severe bleeding in the right vtricle of his brain.

And Charles Sutcliffe (25 May 1905 – 18 March 1966) a sior civil servant. Sutcliffe's father had moved to Liverpool to help with wartime work in 1943 and subsequtly signed on as a ship's gineer, and so was oft at sea during his son's early years. Sutcliffe had two younger sisters, Pauline and Joyce, as well as three older half-brothers, Joe, Ian, and Charles, and an older half-sister, Mattie, from his father's first marriage, to a woman whose name was also Martha.

Wh Sutcliffe's father returned home on leave, he invited his son and art college classmate Rod Murray (also Sutcliffe's housemate and best frid), for a "real good booze-up", slipping £10 into Sutcliffe's pocket before disappearing for another six months.

Beatle Stuart Sutcliffe: 'an Average Boy With Little Evidence Of Future Distinction'

Beatles' biographer Philip Norman wrote that Charles Sutcliffe was a heavy drinker and physically cruel to his wife, which the young Sutcliffe had witnessed.

During his first year at the Liverpool College of Art, Sutcliffe worked as a bin man on the Liverpool Corporation's waste collection trucks.

Lnon was introduced to Sutcliffe by Bill Harry, a mutual frid, wh all three were studying at the Liverpool College of Art. According to Lnon, Sutcliffe had a "marvellous art portfolio" and was a very talted painter who was one of the "stars" of the school.

He helped Lnon to improve his artistic skills, and with others, worked with him wh Lnon had to submit work for exams.

Sutcliffe shared a flat with Murray at 9 Percy Street, Liverpool, before being evicted and moving to Hillary Mansions at 3 Gambier Terrace, the home of another art studt, Margaret Chapman, who vied with Sutcliffe to be the best painter in class.

The flat was opposite the new Anglican cathedral in the rundown area of Liverpool 8, with bare lightbulbs and a mattress on the floor in the corner. Lnon moved in with Sutcliffe in early 1960.

(Paul McCartney later admitted that he was jealous of Sutcliffe's relationship with Lnon, as he had to take a "back seat" to Sutcliffe.)

Sutcliffe and his flatmates painted the rooms yellow and black, which their landlady did not appreciate. On another occasion the tants, needing to keep warm, burned the flat's furniture.

After talking to Sutcliffe one night at the Casbah Coffee Club (owned by Pete Best's mother, Mona Best), Lnon and McCartney persuaded Sutcliffe to buy a Höfner Presidt 500/5 model bass guitar on hire-purchase from Frank Hessey's Music Shop.

Sutcliffe's prior musical experice consisted of singing in the local church choir in Huyton (his mother had insisted on piano lessons for him since the age of nine), playing bugle in the Air Training Corps, and his father having taught him some chords on the guitar.

Sutcliffe's fingers would oft blister during long rehearsals, as he had never practised long ough for his fingers to become calloused, ev though he had previously played acoustic guitar.

He started acting as a booking agt for the group, and they oft used his Gambier Terrace flat as a rehearsal room.

In July 1960, the Sunday newspaper The People ran an article titled "The Beatnik Horror" that featured a photograph tak in the flat below Sutcliffe's of a teaged Lnon lying on the floor, with Sutcliffe standing by a window.

Its owner, Allan Williams, arranged for the photograph to be tak, subsequtly taking over from Sutcliffe to book concerts for the group: Lnon, McCartney, Harrison and Sutcliffe.

The Beatles' subsequt name change came during an afternoon in the Rshaw Hall bar wh Sutcliffe, Lnon, and Lnon's girlfrid, Cynthia Powell, thought up names similar to Holly's band, the Crickets, and came up with Beetles.

Harry—an art school frid and founder and editor of the Mersey Beat newspaper—complained to Sutcliffe that he should be conctrating on art and not music, as he thought that Sutcliffe was a compett musician whose talts would be better used in the visual arts.

While Sutcliffe is oft described in Beatles' biographies as appearing very uncomfortable onstage and oft playing with his back to the audice, their drummer at the time, Best, dies this. He recalls Sutcliffe as being usually good-natured and "animated" before an audice.

Wh the Beatles auditioned for Larry Parnes at the Wyvern Club, Seel Street, Liverpool, Williams later claimed that Parnes would have tak the group as the backing band for Billy Fury for £10 per week (equivalt to £245 in 2021

), but as Sutcliffe turned his back to Parnes throughout the audition—because, as Williams believed, Sutcliffe could not play very well—Parnes said that he would employ the group only if they got rid of Sutcliffe. Parnes later died this, stating his only concern was that the group had no permant drummer.

Sutcliffe's high spot was singing "Love Me Tder", which drew more applause than the other Beatles, and increased the friction betwe him and McCartney. Lnon also started to criticise Sutcliffe, making jokes about Sutcliffe's size and playing.

On 5 December 1960, Harrison was st back to Britain for being under-age. McCartney and Best were deported for attempted arson at the Bambi Kino, which left Lnon and Sutcliffe in Hamburg.

Opinion: Sutcliffe Hints At What Might Have Been

Sutcliffe later borrowed money from his girlfrid, Astrid Kirchherr, in order to fly back to Liverpool on Friday, 20 January 1961, although he returned to Hamburg in March 1961, with the other Beatles.

He briefly lt McCartney his bass until the latter could earn ough to buy a specially made smaller left-handed Höfner 500/1 bass guitar of his own in June 1961, but specifically asked McCartney (who is left-handed) not to change the strings around or restring the instrumt, so McCartney had to play the bass as it was.

In 1967, a photo of Sutcliffe was among those on the cover of the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album (extreme left, in front of fellow artist Aubrey Beardsley).

Sutcliffe met Astrid Kirchherr in the Kaiserkeller club, where she had gone to watch the Beatles perform. She had be brought up by her widowed mother, Nielsa Kirchherr, on Eimsbütteler Strasse, in a wealthy part of the Hamburg suburb of Altona.

After a photo session with the Beatles, Kirchherr invited them to her mother's house for tea and showed them her bedroom, which she had decorated in black, including the furniture, with silver foil on the walls and a large tree branch hanging from the ceiling. Sutcliffe was smitt and began dating Kirchherr shortly afterwards.

He wrote to frids that he was infatuated with her, and asked her German frids which colours, films, books and painters she liked. Best commted that the beginning of their relationship was "like one of those fairy stories".

Sutcliffe later wrote to his parts that he was gaged to Kirchherr, which they were shocked to learn, as they thought he would give up his career as an artist,

After moving into the Kirchherr family's house, Sutcliffe used to borrow her clothes. He wore her leather trousers and jackets, collarless jackets, oversized shirts and long scarves, and also borrowed a corduroy suit with no lapels that he wore on stage, which prompted Lnon to sarcastically ask if his mother had lt him the suit.

Hel Anderson, a fellow studt, remembered his early works as being very aggressive, with dark, moody colours, which was not the type of painting she expected from such a "quiet studt".

If you’ve read my blog post titled: Greige & Taupe: What’s the Big Difference?  you’ll know the basic in’s and out’s. Regardless, let’s do a quick recap:

A Word About Neutrals

Taupes are brown-gray blends that can have a slight purple undertone and a pretty warmth (sometimes purple-pink as well). Usually, the brown takes precedence over the gray.

Have a subtle bit of taupe in them, but can also flash a bit green – there are very few greiges that DON’T have these undertones. Greiges can be well-balanced between gray and beige or lean slightly more gray.

Mushroom is a brown or beige,  with gray in it – meaning that the brown-beige is the dominant colour – the gray is there to step it down. Another way to put it is that mushroom paint colours are warmer than greige colours because they have more brown in them and less purple than taupe. The thing is, a lot of colours AREN’T mushroom, but given the right exposure and environment – they will look like one.

Mushroom paint colours are browns and beiges with some gray in them – the brown-beige remains the slightly dominant factor. If you add MORE gray, you’ll get greige 

Now, brown and beige paint colours often have a warmer, more golden look to them – we’re not talking about those ones. We’re talking about the muted, subdued ones, the ones that can’t quite commit to being ‘warm’, yet don’t look totally greige. However, mushroom-inspired paint colours are still slightly

This means that while mushroom-inspired paint colours are closer to taupe in their temperature, they usually grab less undertone than greige OR taupe and are often more ‘neutral’ looking.

If you get the wrong mushroom, you’ll hallucinate that Ryan Reynolds is painting your home in teal socks and a g-string (hallucinate/fantasize, whatever). If you get the RIGHT one, you’ll end up with a paint colour that is the PERFECT soft neutral and a fabulous backdrop for MANY rooms.

Confusing, I know – but that’s why you’ve got me in your back pocket (and I do pinch…). Now let’s expand on those thoughts just a bit…

South-facing rooms have a warmer light coming in and mushroom paint colours generally do well in these spaces. Yes, they will warm up, but you’ll find that they generally still hold a ‘basic mushroom’ look, particularly if you choose a mushroom that has a wink more gray in it.

Can LOOK like a mushroom colour in a south-facing room (or west-facing in the afternoon). South-facing light is a warm light, so it will take that gray-beige blend and try to lean it more to the beige-brown side, making it look more like mushroom.

JUST REMEMBER, once the sun goes down in the evening, you won’t have that natural light to moderate things, so make sure you like your paint colour all day!

THIS can be a tough sell. Because north-facing light is a slightly gray-blue light, it will ADD gray to a mushroom paint colour – pulling it closer to greige. And this can be okay if you like greige, however, if you prefer the slightly warmer side of things, you might find that a mushroom paint colour in a north-facing room loses the warmth that you were hoping for.

Shown next, SW Anew Gray is likely in a north-facing room as you can see how it falls considerably more to the gray side of things. Again, this is okay if you like gray, but if you are wanting the subtle warmth that mushroom offers, you’ll want to avoid this type of colour in a room with northern exposure.

If you are struggling to find a mushroom that stays warm enough for you in a north-facing room, you may need to bump things up more to the subdued beige range , something like SW Barcelona Beige, as shown in this north-facing room, or Balanced Beige (which we’ll talk about below). But remember, it will go back to its regular warmth once the sun goes down.

East and west-facing rooms are a bit trickier as the light changes SO much throughout the day. Generally speaking, I probably wouldn’t enjoy a mushroom in an east-facing room as it wouldn’t warm up enough and look like it should. A west-facing room, on the other hand, might be flat looking in the morning but will warm up and come to life a bit more in the afternoon.

Now, I bet you’re ready to see some beautiful mushroom-inspired paint colours, so let’s get this party started! And let me say that many parties have started with mushrooms and ended up with a whole bunch of people talking to dogs and running naked down the street (story of my life and I don’t do mushrooms), so let’s keep it PG here people.

Balanced Beige is a beautiful example of a mushroom paint colour. However, as we talked about earlier, if you put a mushroom colour in a south-facing (warm) room, it could look a bit too brown-warm. However, put it in a north or east-facing room and BAM, you might have your perfect mushroom paint colour!

Just LOOK at the fungi-inspired colour of these walls – the EPITOME of mushroom, I’m bustin’ out the garlic butter and pepper!

If we move up to Accessible Beige, Balanced Beige’s lighter version, it’s too light to give a mushroom look, regardless of your exposure.

Pashmina is gorgeous. It’s a soft, medium-toned neutral that WILL lean a bit more gray in a north-facing room, but in a south-facing room can look like the PERFECT mushroom paint colour!

Loggia is along similar lines to Balanced Beige, losing the typical ‘golden beige’ look and coming up more muted and neutral – ESPECIALLY in a north or east-facing room !

And I rely 100% on photos from my E-Design clients, so while I don’t always have JUST the photo I need, I do the best I can with what I have while still getting you the info you need! 

Oooo, this is a close one. Plymouth Rock has a weeee willy wink of taupe in it, but also borders on mushroom.

Anew Gray is a light-medium greige that IS a greige and is a stretch when it comes to mushroom. However, in a south-facing room or a west-facing room in the afternoon, it does lean that bit warmer and starts nodding towards a mushroom-inspired look! I also love the slightly darker, Mega Greige.
